Copper pour greyed out

I seem to remember I had this problem several years ago, but I cannot remember the solution.

Are there any prerequisites to be able to add copper pours? I have just did some major changes to my latest project, and suddenly the option for adding a copper pour is greyed out. Have tried to reset, but that did not solve the problem. No problem on the old project.

Regards

Ulf

Yes, you need to have an electrical layer (say the top layer) set as the layer to add the copper pour to.

  • I try to chose thetop layer fromth PCB tab, but still greyed out.

    Have added the project file.

  • Hi Iliya,

Why can’t we have a ‘copper’ pour on the silk screen?

You could have some highlighted text bound in a solid box... obviously you can’t connect it to a net...

  • I sent you the wrong file! Really sorry, so here is the right one:

  • You cannot add copper pour to the bottom silkscreen.

Change layer to say: "Top Layer".
    Works fine:

  • No need to add files in a .zip file. DEX files are already compressed.

Then it's not copper, it's ink.

  • Ok,

I did have copper in quotes.. is it possible/easy to do an an INK pour?

I thought Melbourne was just locked up locked down!

There is no graphics pour facility.

  • Yes, we are in lock down again...

Thanks for sharing your UK variant of the scourge with us..

Top and bottom silkscreens are inherently poor resolution due to the nature of the silkscreen process.

    https://www.customplanet.co.uk/what-is-screen-printing-step-by-step-i50

Doing a fine margin around text would probably 'smudge'.

PCB silkscreens are for humans. Pick and Place ignores them.
    Humans might use them for:

    • Manual placement - not used by Pick and Place
    • Part location to fault locate (as most boards are throw-away replacements, this is not useful).
    • Connector location

    Silkscreen cost money.
    Silkscreen consume PCB layout space.

Look inside a mobile phone - any silkscreen?

  • Best to add text with copper pour surround on sat the 'top layer'.

  • Notice the resolution difference:

  • I have to admit that I feel rather stupid now! My excuse is that there are a lot of options, and I am NOT definitely a guru.
Thank you so much for your patience!

  • By the way, how do you manage add the text like you do? It looks very nice, so are there any tutorials about this stuff?

The text is on the top copper layer.
See the mobile phone PCB. As there is no silkscreen, the board version on written in copper on the top track layer.

You are not stupid. There are loads of options and PCB design can be complex!

  • The reason was there all along; in the tooltip!

  • Iliya,

It is no big deal to me about an ink pour, I can get away without it..

Some pcb fab houses are worse than others when it comes to silk screen and it also depends on the colour chosen, black on white from my experience doesn’t look good as far as resolution (at least with JCLpcb..)

Honestly I would probably prefer a solid box around my MBG with an oval keepout area around my text not the standard 0.15mm clearance..

As I said I don’t need it, I often just put a box around text I wish to highlight and that works well.

    Mick

  • Here is a photo showing typical silkscreen quality you can expect:

  • Here is another:

  • So, if if want high quality small text, put in on a metal layer.
